Late

I checked the time on my phone and my eyes almost popped out.

11:12 AM.

“Crap!” I shouted.

I was supposed to be in class by 9:30. It was already more than half an hour late. And I was still near the hospital.

I had forgotten all about college.

I looked at my bandaged hand and sighed.

One monkey bite, one army doctor, and my entire day had flipped upside down.

I stood near the hospital gate, thinking for a second.

“Should I go to college now? Or should I just… go home?”

My brain quickly answered.

“Home.”

I texted in my college group chat:

“Not feeling well. Got an injection. Will join tomorrow.”

Half true.

I booked an auto and leaned back in the seat.

My thoughts, of course, went straight to him.

Major Adhrit Chauhan.

Such a serious face. But those eyes? Deep, cold, and mysterious. Like he had a hundred stories but didn’t want to share even one.

I smiled a little.

“Drama queen,” I whispered to myself. “You got a small injection and now you’re writing love stories in your head.”

But still, something about him…

I shook my head.

Focus, Voymika.

My house wasn’t far. After 20 minutes, I reached and rang the bell.

Mom opened the door.

“You’re back? So early?” she asked, surprised.

“I had a small accident,” I said, showing her my hand.

“Accident? Oh my God, what happened?”

I walked in, dropped my bag on the sofa, and sat down.

“Monkey bite.”

“MONKEY?!” Mom shouted, running to the kitchen.

“Should I give you haldi milk or ginger tea or glucose water? Wait—maybe coconut water?”

“Mumma, chill!” I laughed. “I already went to the hospital. Got the injection too.”

She came back with water and sat beside me.

“Are you okay now? Dard kam hua?”

I nodded. “Thoda. I have to go for three days to one month to complete the course.”

She gave a sigh of relief.

“Good you went quickly. These things can get serious.”

Just then, Vyom came out of his room. His laptop was in one hand, and a biscuit in the other.

“What happened?” he asked, walking toward me.

“Bitten by a monkey.”

“What?” He raised an eyebrow.

“I was feeding them and someone threw water. They got scared and one bit me.”

Vyom sat down and looked at my hand.

“You okay now?”

“Yes, got treated.”

He nodded and went back to his room. No drama, no lecture—just his usual protective silence.

Mom looked at me.

“Go freshen up. I’ll make something light for you.”

I went to my room, lay on the bed, and stared at the ceiling.

Life was normal.

But today?

Today was not normal.

I freshened up and came back. Mom gave me poha and chai.

After lunch, I sat near the window. The weather was cloudy. My bandage itched a little, but I didn’t touch it.

Then I remembered—I had to go back after three days. I can forget anything but not this.

And maybe… see him again.

I opened my diary and started writing.

"Dear life,

One monkey bite changed my whole day. But that doctor… changed something else."

I stopped.

Major Adhrit Chauhan.

Even his name felt powerful.

I kept my diary aside and pulled out my phone. Searched his name online.

Nothing.

No Instagram. No Facebook.

“Privacy giraffe,” I muttered.

Maybe that’s what made him more interesting.

Just then, Mom peeked in.

“Feeling better?”

I nodded.

“Don’t feed monkeys again.”

“Yes, mom.”

She smiled and left.

I looked at the ceiling and whispered,

“See you soon, Major sir.”
