Monkey bite

It was just a normal Tuesday.

I had my blue bag, headphones in my ears, and chana in my hand. I love feeding monkeys near the college temple. I know, it's weird. But they look cute when they eat, and their little kids.

I sat on the temple steps and started throwing some chana. Five monkeys came running, and I smiled.

"Good morning, cutie gang," I whispered.

I was about to throw more when suddenly, someone shouted from behind,

“Throw water! They’re coming too close!”

Before I could even blink, water splashed everywhere.

The monkeys screamed—and went wild.

And one monkey jumped on my hand and bit me.

"AHHH!" I screamed, holding my hand tightly. The pain was sharp like a knife. I felt like crying. I stood up, but my legs were shaking. The monkeys ran away, but the damage was done I felt dizziness.

I looked down—blood was slowly dripping from my wrist.

"Shit," I whispered.

Just then, an aunty came running towards me. She wore a green saree.

“Beta, are you okay?” she asked.

I nodded quickly, even though I wasn’t.

She looked at my hand and gasped,

“This is bad. Come, there’s a military hospital nearby. My son is posted there. He’ll help.”

I didn’t think twice. I followed her, trying not to cry. My hand was burning. My dupatta was wrapped around it, but the blood didn’t stop.

We reached the hospital. It was neat, clean, and quiet. I had never been inside a military area before. Everyone looked serious. Everyone wore uniforms.

The aunty spoke to the nurse and then turned to me.

“Sit here. My son is coming.”

I sat on the bench. My heart was beating fast.

What if I get a big injection? What if I faint?

Before I could overthink more, I heard a deep voice.

“What happened?”

I looked up.

And for the first time, I forgot my pain.

He was tall. Wearing a dark green uniform. Short hair. Sharp jaw. Deep brown eyes. And a voice that could stop time.

I stared at him like a fool.

He looked at my hand and spoke again.

“Monkey bite?”

I nodded.

“Come inside.”

I followed him into the room. It smelled like medicine. He took a chair, and I sat in front of him.

He opened his kit and wore gloves.

“Name?”

“Voymika Kapoor.”

“Age?”

“20.”

He nodded and looked at my hand. Then back at me.

“Were you fighting with monkeys?” he asked suddenly.

“Huh?”

“Why did they attacked on you?.”

I blinked. Then smiled a little.

“I was feeding chana to the monkey before he bit me.”

He didn’t laugh. Just looked at me. I wiped my tear.

Then slowly, carefully, a nurse started cleaning the wound.

I flinched. It hurt.

“Don’t move,” he said, guiding me.

“I’m trying! But he's touching like it’s a stone, not skin!”

He looked at me. This time, I saw a small smile. Just for one second.

Then it was gone.

“You’ll need an injection,” he said.

My eyes widened.

“Please, doctor sir, have mercy. I’m scared of needles.”

“You were brave enough to feed monkeys. Be brave now.”

I gulped. Closed my eyes.

I felt the sting. But he was quick.

“Done.”

I opened one eye.

“Already?”

He nodded.

I looked at him.

“Thanks… um, what’s your name?”

He paused.

“Major Adhrit Chauhan.”

Major. Wow. Sounds like something from an action movie.

“You’re very serious, Major sir.”

He raised an eyebrow.

“And you’re very talkative.”

I smiled. “People say that.”

I stood up slowly. My hand still hurt but not too much now.

He gave me a paper.

“Take this to the nurse. She’ll give you the rest of the medicine.”

I took it and nodded.

Before I turned to leave, he added—

“You’ll have to come for the for month, leaving three days. The injection is given in doses and if you forget any the treatment will start again from starting..... from first injection.”

I paused. “Oh... okay.”

Which reminded me—thankfully, I was here for a month-long college trip. I had time.

I smiled. “I’ll be here. Gapping of three days, right? Hope you’re on duty.”

He didn’t reply. Just stared for a second, then turned away.

I left the room. My heart was still racing. And not because of the monkey.

It was because of him.

Major Adhrit Chauhan.

He was handsome. I palmed my face to hide the upcoming smile.
